Miri, Sarawak | 13-17 Nov 2025
13 Nov : All of us got up before the crack of dawn only to read a message from Air Asia informing us that our 930am flight to Miri will be delayed to 11am+, then in the airport while waiting, we were informed it'll be delayed again to 1pm+. The twice delay messed up our plans in Miri.
We were so tired upon arrival that we checked in to Jinhold Serviced Apartments and opted to eat in its in-house Mak Restaurant.
Too tired to do much we ordered pizzas, to our surprise it was good, so good we ordered them again on our stay before our trip back to Semenanjung.
14 Nov : Before we went to buy all the stuff for the program in Niah National Park (NNP), we went for a dim sum breakfast.
(1) Reasonably priced dim sum (2) Must have kolo mee. This is a red kolo mee, I prefer the original one, nicer & not sweet. (4-5) Next door - local goodies.
At night, we went for dinner at a friend's house - all local dishes
15-16 Nov : Before we enter NNP we had our lunch at a kopitiam (I shan't mention the name of the shop). This bowl of crayfish noodle cost us RM49, and we think we'd been overcharged because the owner realized we are not locals. Had to wait for more than an hour for our so expensive lunch. Our jaw dropped upon hearing the cost when settling the bill. If we've denture, it probably would have fallen out) :/
While at NNP
On the last day we took a trek to Niah cave. The trek in/out totalled about 2 hours.
(1) long trek on wooden planks, some of the planks are ooold (2-3) Plenty of old² trees (4) Millipede - quite a lot of them, lots are found on the railings (5) Dried leaves from this tree is beautiful, the vein or fold of the leaf stands in stark relief. (6) Green hammer head snake. 1 of the most poisonous snakes in Borneo. We ooh-ahh taking pictures of it and scattered upon hearing the guide saying that it's possible it can leap up.. I stand quite far and zoom to snap picture but still scattered away to be safe. Yikes 😬
Arriving at Niah Cave. For Malaysian the entrance fee is RM10 + RM2 for the boat ride. The boat ride is less than a minute ride, you can't swim or wade across though. We were told it's known to have crocodiles and water snakes.
We left NNP around 5pm+ and stop by Tanjung Bungai to watch the sunset. Light rain started while we were there enjoying the sunset.
It gets dark fast in Borneo, and while on our way back to Miri heavy rain started. I found out that the JKR install lights along the sides of the rails that has got rivers underneath it.
Due to the rain, we arrive Miri late and had to eat in Jinhold Mak Restaurant again. This time we tried other dishes too.
Top: Nasi kerabu with fried chicken & pickled veg.
Middle: Grilled Sea bass with mushroom & sweet sauce (I don't like the sauce, doesn't suit the fish).
Bottom: Grilled lamb slices (thinly sliced) with potato chips.
17 Nov : the day before we leave Miri, we had lunch with some friends...
and catch-up over a cuppa & cup of Joe at friends' house...
(1) Kuih Kapit - made with sago flour (2) Kom-piah - this salty version came baked. The locals like to deep fried it and stuff it with spiced minced meat. Goes well with coffee or tea. (3) Chinese evergreen belongs to the genus Aglaonema and the Araceae family. The pink edges is known as Siam Pink or Siam Red. (4) Texas sage - edibility, not known (5) Asparagus Fern - not a true fern but a member of the lily family. Midly toxic to humans and pets.
PJ... Here we come...
